Soap nuts, the dried fruit husks of the soapberry tree. They hold saponin, which is a natural soap, and they have been used for washing clothes for a very long time.
Put a few in the little cotton bag and throw it in with the load. Reuse them for several washes. They want warm water, so for a cold wash soak the bag in hot water first and pour that in.
